Daily forklift safety inspection checklist. Pre-shift checks for tires, brakes, hydraulics, lights, horn, and operator readiness before operating a forklift.
View Live ExampleVerify the operator has a valid forklift license and is authorized to operate this specific type of forklift. Unauthorized operation is prohibited.
Walk around the entire forklift. Look for fluid leaks under the truck, tire damage or low pressure, damaged forks (cracks, bends), and any loose or missing parts.
Inspect forks for cracks, bends, or uneven wear. Check the mast chains for proper tension and lubrication. Raise and lower the mast to verify smooth operation.
Start the forklift in neutral. Test the service brake — it should stop the truck fully within a short distance. Test the parking brake — the truck should not roll on a slight incline.
Test all hydraulic functions: lift, lower, tilt forward, tilt back, side shift (if equipped). Controls should respond smoothly with no jerking or unusual noise.
Sound the horn — it must be clearly audible. Check headlights, tail lights, and warning lights. Verify the backup alarm sounds when in reverse.
Check engine oil, hydraulic fluid, coolant, and battery water (for electric forklifts). For propane forklifts, verify the tank level is sufficient for the shift.
Record the inspection on the daily checklist form: date, operator name, forklift ID, and any issues found. Report defects to the supervisor before operating.
